Synopsis

My aim in this essay is to explore the logical role of an important class of concepts – concepts that are expressed by common nouns (Sortal concepts) – in a fragment of our conceptual scheme. It seems to me that this exploration is essential not only for purely logical purposes but for certain philosophical and linguistic purposes as well. The logic of common nouns, I believe, illuminates, and helps solve the problem of essentialism. It explains some of the distinctive behavior of common nouns in our language. And it provides material that I think will led to a better understanding of the relationship of logic to ontology, the behavior of m ass nouns, and the vagueness in singular terms. . . I hope that philosophers and linguists will not let their natural aversion to technical logic turn them away from this work. -- From Authors Preface
