New York: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, 1981. First American edition. First printing. Hardcover. Black cloth with silver spine lettering. Fine in a fine dust jacket. A crisp, bright copy. Publisher's original price of $12.95 intact on jacket flap. Comes with archival-quality mylar dust jacket protector. Octavo, 217 pages. Spark’s sixteenth novel follows aspiring writer Fleur Talbot as she navigates a peculiar autobiographical fiction project and a literary society full of secrets and sabotage. Often seen as a comic reflection on the art of fiction itself, the novel blends metafiction and social satire with Spark’s trademark precision and wit. Shortlisted for the 1981 Booker Prize.
