Add to basketA ground-breaking record of the lower-class citizens of London in the mid-nineteenth century by Henry Mayhew, illustrated throughout. First published as newspaper articles in theMorning Chronicle, this work was an important record of the workers of London's streets. Often using material taken from interviews, it was also statistically important.Written by Henry Mayhew (1812-1887), a journalist and social reformer. As well as co-foundingPunch, Mayhew published numerous important articles surveying the city's poor; these were compiled into this work. The first edition of this work.Volume I contains twenty-five illustrated plates.Volume II contains twenty-three illustrated plates.Volume III contains twenty illustrated plates and an unpaginated section to the rear titled 'To Correspondents' and 'From Correspondents'.Collated, lacking four plates to Volume I.Volume II and II end mid-sentence as issued, a binding error of the publisher.A fascinating first edition of this account of life and professions in London in the mid-nineteenth century. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, some shelf wear to the boards and significant bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Splitting to the cloth to the joints of Volume I and II. Internally, a previous owner's small ink notation to the front free-endpaper of each volume. Internally, hinges lightly strained. Remaining binding is firm. The odd spot or handling mark to the pages, which are otherwise generally clean throughout. Good.
