Hardcover. Condition: Fair. A fair only copy of the first People's edition. There is a bit of spine lean, and some foxing and tanning to the prelims and rear endpapers. The front free endpaper (pictured) has a short tear at the top of its right-hand edge, and an old previous ownership name dated 1906 in fountain pen. The biggest flaw is some creasing to the bottom right-hand corners of some pages in the second half of the volume; I have pictured the most severe example. The binding is secure and the main contents are clean, apart from some occasional light foxing. Overall, a reasonable copy of the first People's edition, but with some creasing to some of the pages in their bottom outer corners. Seller Inventory # ABE-1771925078468

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. John Tenniel (illustrator). 1st Edition. First USA edition. Hardcover. FIRST EDITION. FIRST ISSUE. Dated 1872. With the typo "Wade" for "wabe" on page 21/ 8vo. Bound in red cloth with a triple gilt ruled borders on front board with a circular illustration, of the Red Queen, the back board has a blind triple design only. Gilt lettering on spine with dark green coated end papers. With a beautiful hand inscription in ink 'To Miss Anna.from Caroline . 1873'. 224 pages illustrated with fifty engravings by John Tenniel. The front hinge is partially cracked and the end paper on the front cover has partially split due to the cover being bent. The damage has come through a little to the front cover, but has not affected the integrity of the binding, it still remains strong. Otherwise a very nice clean copy which is unusual for an early Lewis Carroll book. Most have been well read and are worn. Rare in this condition despite the from the front cover. Size 185 x 130mm (7.25 x 5 inches approximately) This being an American edition it is slightly different to the UK edition. The cloth used has a texture to it, the UK edition being a flat smooth cloth, also the gilt decoration on the back board is stamped blind and not in gilt as the UK edition. The book was issued in an edition of 9000 copies in December 1871 but had the 1872 imprint on the title page. Macmillan reportedly only sent a small number for the first American edition because domestic demand was so strong. Some, with the trying error went to Lea & Shepard edition in Boston and Lea Sheppard and Dillingham in New York. But all bear the Macmillan's device. (The Lewis Carroll Handbook page 62-64).
