Allen & Unwin. This is one of the rarest items we have for sale, more scarce than other first editions for being in unique fine condition. Unlike other first edition sets, only 1000 copies were ever produced. The slipcase is the most rare aspect of this set as most were damaged or lost. Note the slipcase covers are bright, no fading, no denting or rubbing to the case. The book spine gilt is complete, bright, no rubbing. This set is outstanding, thus the price. likely the best we'll ever see again. This set is fine/ fine. Only 1000 sets were produced in special slipcase featuring the Pauline Bayne's "triptych" artwork. This set was presumably to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the publication of The Fellowship of the Rings. Though 1963 printings, it was the only release in the 1964 as a special deluxe edition set. Printings: 13th impression, 1963, 10th impression, 1963; 10th impression, 1963, in buckram faux leather, no dust jackets as issued. The books are unread, Two Towers has very slight fading to the black on the spine and the cover material with slight ripples from being loose. The is a recognized manufacturing flaw on TT with this set, thus normal. The slipcase has no damage or bumps, scratches or rubbing, colours still bright. like dust jackets on books, much of the value is the perfect slipcase. One of the finest we've seen which frankly is less than six sets with cases in our 23 years a specialist Tolkien dealer. I doubt we'll see another in our lifetime this fine.
