FIRST EDITIONS, 2nd, 2nd and 1st impressions respectively. Tolkien's sequel to 'The Hobbit' (1937), 'The Lord of the Rings' was not a trilogy at all, the author conceiving it as a single work divided into six continuous books. It was his publishers who divided it into three parts to avoid heavy printing costs at the outset and possibly to feel the water given the amount of time which had elapsed since Tolkien's previous fantasy novel. Of course it has never been out of print since. Octavo. Finely bound in recent full red morocco with uniform decoration including single rule to boards, gilt titles and tooling to spines in 6 compartments within raised bands, with original spines bound-in, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Fold-out map present in each volume. A small depression to upper board of 'Fellowship', otherwise a very fine and handsome set.
