Originally published between July 1954 and October 1955 (The Fellowship of the Ring, July 1954; The Two Towers, November 1954; and The Return of the King, October 1955), Tolkien's heroic romance (as he preferred to identify his work) would grow to become one of the most beloved works of the twentieth century.
