She embarked on a solo career in 1905; in 1915, Los Angeles, she co-founded the Denishawn School of Dancing with Ted Shawn. In 1927, when they opened a New York branch, illustrator Ruth Harwood became an intimate member of their troupe. Indeed, St. Denis credits Harwood for editing her poems.
