Algernon Charles Swinburne was an English author, known for writing about taboo and controversial topics of the time, such as lesbianism, cannibalism, sado-masochism and many others. He contributed to the noted eleventh edition of theEncyclopaedia Britannica.Serialised in 1877, it was originally published under the pseudonym Mrs. Horace Manners, and was never publicly acknowledged by Swinburne. This is the first edition in book form.This novel is told through a series of thirty letters with a prologue in five chapters. Following the unforgettable character of Lady Midhurst and affairs of marriage within her family. Complete with half title. One leaf of advertisement bound in to the front. In a half pebbled calf binding over marbled boards, gilt to the top edge. Externally sound with minor shelf wear, minor rubbing to the spine, joints, and extremities. Minor chipping to the head of the spine. Minor loss to the lower right corner of the text block, not affecting any of the text. Internally firmly bound. Minor age toning to the odd leaf, otherwise the pages are bright and clean, only some faint handling marking to p. 47. Very Good.
