THE MACE OF SOULS

Falca Breks lived by nefarious means - extorting money from downtrodden refugees in the decaying port city of Draica. A street thief without principles, he sets out to steal jewels from beautiful high-born Amala Damarr - and ends up losing his heart to her instead.

But their love enflames the jealousy of the zealot Saphrax - a hulking spiritlifter who imprisons Amala's essence in a crystal mace, as a sacrifice to his strange and hungry god. Falca then must set out on a dangerous quest across treacherous lands and pirate-prowled seas of the Six Kingdoms to free his adored one's captive soul...and to discover his own!

A common thief becomes an unexpected hero as he pursues a cult of religious fanatics through the seedy slums of Draica to the pirate holdings of the Ebony Isles and the desert of Gebroan in search of the stolen soul of the woman he loves. Fergusson ( The Shadow of His Wings, LJ 2/15/87) injects his version of the heroic quest with a heavy dose of grim realism as his ne'er-do-well hero and his down-and-out companions discover a world beyond their own small ambitions. Highly recommended.-- JC
