About this Item
Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-335 [336-344: blank] [note: last four leaves are blanks], original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. First edition. "Collects fourteen short stories, including three with supernatural themes. 'Was It All a Dream?' is about the discovery of a lost will by means of premonitory dreams and a ghost's guidance. 'An Ever-Present Help' is about an answered prayer. The most interesting, 'Out of the Past,' relates a case of apparent reincarnation in which a minister in a prosperous New England town has recurring dreams in which he is ordered about and sometimes beaten by a woman who resembles his otherwise bland parishioner, Mrs. Leonard. Most of the stories concern the shifting expectations and behavior of women during the wave of feminism that powered the suffragette movement. In most cases, the author strikes a skeptical note about the new doctrines." - Robert Eldridge. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 N-68. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1994). A fine copy in printed dust jacket which is separated along front spine fold and lacks about half of the spine panel. (#117722). Seller Inventory # 117722
