He had long been portrayed as a harsh, eccentric, and neglectful father?largely due to Elizabeth Gaskell?s 1857 biography of Charlotte.The authors used Patrick?s own letters and local records to present him as a deeply compassionate, educated man who navigated immense personal tragedy, including outliving his wife and all six of his children.The printed text which ends at page 528 is followed by a chronology of the family in MS.omitting the index,appendices,bibliography and index of Bronte's letters reflecting the transition from draft to final publication. Also lacking are the 33 illustrations typically ommitted to save cost during the text-correction phase. A rare collectors copy and a window into the publishing process.
