MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF MAJOR RIVERS [HARDBACK]

In nearly all countries, the importance of fresh water for every major aspect of development is fully recognized. However, during the last decade it has become clear that it is not a gift of limitless proportions that can be recklessly exploited. Moreover, the problems of fresh water availability have only recently been linked to larger environmental concerns. This book emerges from the activities of the "Nile 2000 Conference" held in February 1992 in Cairo. Selections from the over 100 paper presented cover a diverse range of topics, including the Nile, St. Lawrence, Mississippi, and Yellow Rivers, and issues of quality management, sedimentation regulation, and challenges for the coming millennium. Earth scientists and professionals in water management will find these proceedings an informative warning on the dangers facing our water supply.
