FIRST EDITION. Half title, front., illus, 4pp cata.; rather spotted, lower outer corners of title, contents leaf, first text leaf, final five text leaves, cata. & following e.p. torn affecting text. Orig. pictorial boards lettered in black & red, blue vertical-grain cloth spine lettered in gilt, ad for Holbrook's sauce on following board; extremities a bit rubbed. A good copy only. Glover & Greene list only one title by Dellanoy; Hubin p.115. A sensational romp, with Alf Spriggs, a 'cracksman' as its main character. Burford Delannoy, 1856-1931, born Adolphus Eugene Judge, was a barrister, playwright, actor, and novelist, who performed and wrote under the name Delannoy, which was inspired by his mother's maiden name. The son of a bookseller, Delannoy wrote a number of detective stories from 1897 until his death. The cover art depicts a well-dressed woman walking through a door while looking back at a man tipping his hat. A later iteration of the 'yellowback' format, incorporating a cloth spine, presumably to look impressive on a railway bookstand. Seller Inventory # 100266
