The majestic biography of John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough; soldier, statesman, hard-headed Churchillian ancestor. First published in England as a lush four-volume set upon which Churchill lavished a great deal of care and attention in terms of both production and design. Published in the U.S. as a considerably less lavish 6-volume set, though the contents of both editions are identical. This is a very good First English edition set, in the very rare dust jackets, which are generally in exceptional condition, a trifle edge-chipped, else fine. Volume I jacket is neatly price-clipped, but correct, the others are unclipped. Volume II jacket has a few faint ink marks and creases on the spine, and a modest dampstain on an upper corner of the rear face. The books are in remarkable condition; the fade-prone cloth virtually unfaded, the gilded tops bright, the contents fine and unfoxed. 8vo (2,500+ pages, illustrated with portraits,maps, plans.)
