Neatly extracted from a bound volume and expertly mended. This Act, known as the Massachusetts Government Act Repeal, 1778, or the First Conciliatory Act, 1778 repealed the Massachusetts Government Act, 1774 (which was one of the five Intolerable Acts passed in 1774 that were designed to suppress dissent and restore order in Massachusetts in the wake of the Boston Tea Party). The 1774 Act abrogated the 1691 Charter of the Province of Massachusetts Bay and gave its royally-appointed governor wide-ranging powers. In a conciliatory move, parliament passed the 1778 Act in an attempt to reverse the severe restrictions and restore the governing of Massachusetts according to the terms of the original 1691 Charter. However, by the time this conciliatory law was passed, it was far too late: the colonies had already declared independence and the war was well under way.
