Item description from seller

First edition of the Newbery Award-winning historical novel of pre-Revolutionary Upstate New York. Lovely copy of this historical novel for middle-grade readers, set in 1756 and based on real figures of the Hudson Valley region during the French and Indian War. Edmonds' deft and understated stylistic realism is itself now of considerable historical interest, offering a picture of violent colonial conflict exclusively from the viewpoint of a slave-owning Dutch family - and published only months before the US would enter World War II. 10'' x 8''. Original tan cloth with brown stamped lettering. In original unclipped ($2.00) pictorial dust jacket. Green pictorial endpapers. Illustrated with six double-page color lithographs and many more full- and partial-page lithographs in black and white. xiv, 50 pages. Touches of rubbing, edgewear to jacket. A few spots of soil to fore-edge. Overall, bright and sound. Near fine in a near fine jacket.
