FIRST EDITION 1690, the first issue intended for presentation without the commercial imprint on the title-page; the regular issue has the full imprint: "London: Printed for Ben. Griffin.". Small 8vo, approximately 170 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, engraved portrait frontispiece of Pepys by Kneller, large folding table, title printed in red and black, pages: [4], 1-214, [18], last page blank, original endpapers still present. Original speckled calf covers, rebacked to match, dark green gilt title label, gilt rules and date to spine, red speckled edges, engraved armorial bookplate to first pastedown (Hugh Cecil Earl of Lonsdale). Narrow brown stain to edges of pastedowns and pale offset to free endpapers, 12 tiny pale old ink manuscript corrections to pages: 11, 33, 39, 40, 42, 57, 70, 90, 92,103,113,120, a few of the corrections in the printed marginal notes, some ticks in the margins and some in the list of ships and vessels section, all may be in Pepys's hand or under his direction,15 pages with neat old ink underlining, mostly a couple of lines apart from 2 pages (see attached images), an old ink manuscript shelf number, (Lb Sect 2) on first pastedown, some pages are cancels, a very good copy with very crisp clean text.
