About this Item
WADDELL, J.A.L. MEMOIRS AND ADDRESSES OF TWO DECADES. Edited by Frank W. Skinner. Easton, Pa., Mack Printing Company, 1928. Thick 8vo., ribbed green cloth, spine stamped in gilt. First Edition. John Alexander Low Waddell was a famous consulting engineer who designed more than 1,000 bridges and large structures throughout the world. His work set standards for elevated railroad systems and he helped develop materials for large-span bridges. His most important contribution was the development of the steam-powered high-lift bridge. Many of Waddell's surviving bridges are now considered historic landmarks. Signed presentation from Waddell on a front blank page: "To Joseph H. Ehlers, Esq., C.E. with the compliments of the Author. J.A.L. Waddell. New York City, May 13, 1932." Ehlers was a civil engineer and a structural engineering professor at Pei Yang University in China. He was also an American diplomat and explorer. With Ehler's Chinese stamp on the presentation page and his English name stamped to the rear endpaper. Also with a strip of three Chinese characters tipped to the rear endpaper. Scarce to find an inscribed copy of this title!! Very Good (some rubbing & light staining covers, gilt on spine nice & bright; contents clean & tight; front endpaper excised). $450.00.
