Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition Rare. Memoirs of the Forties. Slight foxing to edge. Small mark to back inside cover. Wear, tear and repair to D/J. Couple of small tears to top edge of D/J. Price clipped to D/J. Soho in wartime was quite unlike anything else; so, in his way, was Julian Maclaren-Ross. In this book he vividly, and often very funnily, recreates the world of Fitzrovian pubs, coffee houses, chess clubs and night clubs, of which he was one of the most distinctive, and certainly the most long-standing inhabitant. No one could be better equipped than he to provide the anecdotal history of a period and place that, between the bombs, offered to writers and artists of all kinds, whether famous or infamous, a home from home. A familiar figure at the bar of the Wheatsheaf, in the Gargoyle or the Mandrake, Maclaren-Ross was, with his clove carnation and his gold-topped stick, his fur coat and his dark glasses, both a dandy and a natural bohemian. Recently invalid our of the Army, he was, in this Soho period of 1941-6, already celebrated as the author of The Stuff to Give the Troops, a brilliant collection of military stories, and of a comic novel about the Depression. Although Maclaren-Ross was to die tragically and suddenly in the autumn of 1964 with his manuscript only three-quarters finished, what he wrote is not only self-contained and extremly entertaining in its own right, but it provides a rich and unique source-book for literary historians. His own stories, on which his reputation has hitherto rested, have long been out of print. The best of them are reprinted here, together with his fine memoir of Alun Lewis. A representative selection of Illustrations, together with facsimiles of his remarkable handwriting, make this as just memorial to both the writer and his time. Illustrated. 344 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Academic and Scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Educational Reference Literature.). Seller Inventory # 107312
