BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 55 pgs, portrait frontis. Original black cloth covers with silver gilt decoration on front, beveled boards and with black endpapers. Inscription from author, the son of General Lincoln. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing to edges, gilt on front partially rubbed off. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: This memorial volume for Brevet Brigadier General was authored by his son. At the outbreak of the Civil War Lincoln was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 34th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The 34th Massachusetts proceeded to Virginia and was engaged at Harper's Ferry in July, 1863. During the Shenandoah Valley Campaign in May 1864, he was wounded and captured at New Market. Held in a prison camp in Harrisburg, Virginia, he and other prisoners escaped. After a successful 17-day post-escape evasion, he reached Union lines and rejoined the 34th Massachusetts. He was promoted Colonel in command of the regiment in September, 1864. He participated in operations against Richmond, Petersburg and was at the surrender at Appomattox Court House in April, 1865. For meritorious services, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on June 23, 1865. His prison and escape narrative is pgs 33-55. While Lincoln's history of the 34th Mass Infantry is well known, this small little memorial volume is quite scarce and seldom offered for sale.
