Add to basketFirst edition of noted book artist and critic Buzz Spector's first artist's book, completed while still in graduate school. MEMORIES contains a dozen pencils (here lacking one) each with a line from a poem imprinted on their side, which the artist encourages the reader to arrange "in any way which appeals to your sensibilities." For his entire career, books have not only been one of Spector's main mediums, but one of his main subjects as well. As Johanna Drucker has written: "Spector's investigation of the book as image, icon, and symbol engages with the metaphoric role of the book through many facets of its cultural identity. The themes of the library, authorship, and language have all found their way into his [.] work" (THE CENTURY OF ARTISTS' BOOKS 118). And as this early work makes clear, such concerns were present from the start. Spector's work has been shown in numerous museums and galleries, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art (Prato, Italy). From an unknown editions size, but presumably rather small. An important debut from a major book artist. 2'' x 8'' x 1''. Original dark grey cardboard pencil case with mounted typed title and instruction. Containing: 11 (of 12) unsharpened pencils over white synthetic batting insert. Lacking Spector's folded typed transcription of the poem in his preferred order. Small bump tone one corner of the box.
