CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Minty, from a British military family and having served in the British military previously, initially joined the 3rd Michigan Cavalry. They saw action in the siege of Corinth, Mississippi, during which Minty first led a saber charge, something that would be a trademark of his commands. Minty was promoted to full colonel and given command of a new cavalry regiment, the 4th Michigan who were equipped with Colt revolving rifles; their high rate of fire made them a formidable opponent in any fight. Minty performed so well commanding this regiment that he was given command of a Cavalry Brigade in December 1862, which for most of the war would consist of his own 4th Michigan, the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry (Fox-300, pg 254), and the 4th U.S. Cavalry. From the Introduction: "Among the distinguished brigades commands of the Western armies, the brigade commanded by Col. R.H.G. Minty…Its sabers flashed on every battlefield from Knoxville to Vicksburg, and from Columbus, Kentucky to Macon, Georgia. Its guns were heard in almost every ridge and ravine in the States of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia, and its horses were watered in every considerable stream from the Ohio, at Louisville, to the Mississippi, at Vicksburg; and from the father of waters at Columbus, Kentucky, to the Oconee, in Georgia." The 7th Penna Cavalry is recognized as a Fox 300 Fighting Regiment.
