Fourth printing of the true first edition, published in 1952 - the first two printings appeared in 1947, with a third in 1948 before this fourth printing (or fourth impression as stated on the dustwrapper). ***Near fine in green cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver titles are unusually bright still, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked, without any bumps, creases or tears. Top edge stained yellow by the publisher - now lightly faded. Page block edges clean, without any of the usual foxing. There is a light vertical crease to the spine, but no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions or annotations - just a period owner's label - 'H. P. Taylor' - to the top of the front free endpaper. Some very slight offsetting also to the front free endpaper. Interior pages clean with none of the usual foxing. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a very good dark-green and white bordered dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 12s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper states correctly '4th impression' at the top of the front flap. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just slight loss at the top and tail of the spine, not affecting the lettering. Head and tail of spine of dustwrapper slightly rubbed. Some slight edge wear with some small nicks and creasing. The spine and back panel of the dustwrapper are slightly browned. ***224mm x 140mm. 220 pages including index at the back of the book. ***''The purpose of this book is to shift the question of probability from the unconscious to the conscious plane, and its main argument is directed to embattling the eighteenth and nineteenth century assumption against the miraculous. ***But, in the course of this, many subordinate questions are raised - the definition of "Nature," the rival conceptions of her Laws, the different meanings of the word Probability, the status of metaphor and symbol, the imaginative elements in Naturalism, and the antagonism between Christianity and mere "religion."
