CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers are lightly soiled and darkened around edges; gilt bright. Interior has old repair to front hinge, evidence of bookplate or label removal from front endpapers, else is clean and tight. With clear, mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: This is a paper written for the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts and privately printed in a handsome production. Includes "Extracts from a diary written in Libby Prison". The 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, also known as the "Harvard Regiment", so nicknamed because the officers of the 20th were young Harvard graduates. While it fought in all the major engagements with the Army of the Potomac, its baptism of under fire occurred at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, October 26, 1861 as part of the Federal's defeat in this early engagement in the war. The author, graduated from the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard and entered the Civil War as first lieutenant, 20th Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry, was taken prisoner in Oct. 1861, returned to active service with the 39th Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry in Aug. 1862 as lieutenant colonel, and was promoted to colonel, then brigadier general by Mar. 1865 when he retired because of wounds and disability.
