FIRST EDITION (1891), text in English, small 4to, 195 x 220 mm, 7½ x 8¾ inches, cloth backed boards with delightful coloured illustration of Pouf the poodle and a little girl, (24) pages. Sepia frontispiece and title vignette, 7 very sweet colour plates, other jolly sepia vignettes in the verse text. Monsieur Pouf is a large elegant black poodle-dog, born and bred in Russia and bought by a loving Papa for some little girls who of course adore him. Head and tail of spine and corners slightly worn, top corner to upper cover slightly chipped with 10 mm (½") surface paper missing, surface paper slightly chipped at corners of lower cover. Text pages facing colour plates faintly browned, 2 tiny ink marks to 1 margin, occasional slight fingermark, 1 inner joint cracked, binding sound. A very good copy of a delightful book. Neat inscription dated 'Xmas 1890' on half-title. Although British Library accession date is given as 1892, the most likely publication date is 1891.
