FIRST PRINTING in 2 VOLUMES 1816, complete set, in 3 parts, based on the 1634 edition. The work was first printed in 1485 by William Caxton, with editions in 1498, 1529, 1557 and 1634. 2 editions were published in 1816 the first ones to be printed since 1634, of which this 2 volume edition is said to be the first. Small 12mo, approximately 130 x 70 mm, 5 x 2¾ inches, engraved title page with engraved vignette dated 1816, plus letterpress title page dated 1816 and letterpress title page dated 1634 to front of both volumes and the 2 other parts, engraved frontispiece to to each part, folding woodcut illustration of the Round Table following contents pages in Volume 1, Pages: Volume 1: Part 1, [v], iv-xxiv, 1-284; Part 2, xv, [1], 285-468; Part 2 continued, [4], 1-158; Part 3, xvi,159-488, both volumes have half-titles, Volume 1 contains at beginning: Preliminary Remarks on the Origin of the Following Romance, "The preface of William Caxton, to the Christian reader", "The prologue of William Caxton" and the Original Preface or Advertisment, followed by Contents. to the Reader. Bound in full straight blue morocco (by Leishman Westminster, his label at top of first pastedown, he is listed in the London Book Binders, 1780-1840, by Charles Ramsden), gilt lettering to spines and blind decoration between raised bands, small gilt monograph to all covers, all edges gilt, brown endpapers. Spines uniformly faded, patchy fading to covers, pale age toning to engraved plates, 2 bookplates to both first pastedowns. A good clean tight set. THIS SET HAS THE TEXT OF FIRST PRINTING BUT THE PLATES OF THE SECOND PRINTING BY WILKS. It seems that this set was made up especially for the person whose monogram is on the covers with gilt edges, it also includes the woodcut of the Round Table that was not present in the first printing.
