First edition of the great midcentury picture book, about a baby bird who hatches while his mother is out searching for food. Following in the wake of the theory proven by Dr. Seuss's CAT IN THE HAT that silly books with small vocabularies make great reading practice for kids the Beginner Books series continued to issue picture books that would have an immense impact on American classroom education and become recognizable classics across generations. Among these was P.D. Eastman, an artist who began his career in animation at the likes of Walt Disney Studios and Warner Brothers; he was one of the creators of MR. MAGOO. ARE YOU MY MOTHER was Eastman's second contribution to the series (after SAM AND THE FIREFLY in 1958), followed the next year by his magnificent GO, DOG. GO! (1961). Alongside Seuss himself, as well as Stan & Jan Berenstain, Eastman produced some of the most beloved early readers of the twentieth century. Copies are difficult to find with the dust jacket in such nice condition. 9'' x 6.5''. Original glossy color pictorial boards. In original unclipped (195/195) color pictorial dust jacket with rear panel listing 18 titles and "Distributed by Random House." Illustrated by Eastman in color throughout, including endpapers. 64 pages. Contemporary owner bookplate (dated 1961) to front pastedown. Jacket with a couple short closed tears to front panel, another to mid spine, some rubbing to extremities. Book lightly bumped at spine ends and corners, a few touches of soil to corners.
