Boards stained and extremities worn but otherwise a good copy. Early signature at head of title. Illustrated by 30 fine plates, including frontispiece and one double page and by numerous wood engravings throughout text. A classic Victorian sporting manual covering all aspects of sports and games with a particular emphasis on field sports but also covering aquatic sports, boating, swimming, horse racing and the veterinary care of horses and dogs. Among the rural games and outdoor amusements are cricket, archery, curling and skating, riding and driving (carriages). 'Foot-ball' appears in a section entitled 'Minor games with ball,' as 'a game much in vogue in some rural districts, but it is chiefly played at Rugby, and one or two other public schools.' 'Stonehenge' was the pseudonym of John Henry Walsh, FRCS (1810-88) who eventually abandoned his career as a surgeon to become a full time writer on rural sports, especially on horses, dogs and sporting guns. He became editor of The Field in 1857. This second edition appeared in 1856, the same year as the title's first publication. By the time of his death, seventeen further editions of this popular manual had appeared. SPORTS/PASTIMES HUNTING SPORT- RURAL PURSUITS 19TH CENTURY SPORTS/PASTIMES. Seller Inventory # 23273
