He served as U.S. Secretary of Transportation Special Assistant in 1977, where he developed many affirmative action plans during the Carter administration. Gayton accomplished numerous feats of public service during his inspiring 70 years, remembered as a prominent activist, author, politician, attorney and Washingtonian.
