Robert R. Compton was born in 1922 in Pasadena California. He attended Stanford University and studied Geology, receiving his Ph.D. in 1944 after which he became a professor of Geology at Stanford. He created and lead summer field geology courses that were held in California, Nevada, and Utah. This is a classic manual. Much of the content has not changed but some advances have occurred since first published. Nevertheless, practitioners in the field consider this work to be "rock solid". Describes the methods, procedures, and specialized equipment of field work in geology and includes a guide to making maps of specific areas. A guide to advances in the increasingly broad and interpretive discipline of formation mapping theory.
