Well-bound copy of the very rich manual for priests written by the theologian of the Inquisition Francisco de Toledo. In chapter XVI of book IV, Toledo devotes part of his manual to the question of magical practices and witchcraft, considered serious threats to the Catholic faith. The author enjoins priests to be vigilant and to firmly combat any form of magic, curse or witchcraft among the faithful. De Toledo's positions on these questions reflect the influence of the inquisitorial thinking of his time, very concerned with the phenomena of witchcraft. Slightly rubbed binding, cracked jaw edges, one blunt corner, stamps of a disappeared religious institution on the title page, fine worm bite in the margin of almost the entire work but without affecting the text (see specific photo) , other minor defects. -- Francisco de Toledo (1532-1596) was a Spanish Jesuit priest in Salamanca, known for his work on Aristotle . He studied philosophy and theology, notably with Domingo de Soto, and taught these subjects at the Collegio Romano. He was also theologian of Sacred Penance and the Inquisition, apostolic preacher at the papal court, consultor of the Holy Office and member of almost all the congregations of the Roman Curia. In 1593 he was the first Jesuit to be made a cardinal and played an important role in the revision of the Vulgate. Highly appreciated by the popes, he lived for a long time in Rome, and carried out various diplomatic missions on their behalf. His work focuses on Aristotle's Logic and Metaphysics in a spirit of reconciliation with Christianity. The Instructio sacerdotum was designed by De Toledo as a detailed instruction manual for priests, to guide them in the exercise of their ministry. The work deals with various issues related to the priesthood, including mortal sins, the duties and virtues of priests, and the administration of the sacraments. Francisco de Toledo's Instructio sacerdotum gained a great reputation and was widely used for the training of priests, becoming a major reference in the Catholic theological tradition. This practical work is a continuation of De Toledo's broader theological reflection on the priesthood, developed particularly in his biblical commentaries and his treatises on the sacraments.
