Both volumes can be identified as first edition, first printing. For Vol I, page ix has an 1* at bottom; preface is before contents; line 22, p 225 "a providence or purpose for Hilda, if for no other human"; 283 pages followed by ads for other books, dated February, 1860. However, pages 3 - 14 of the ads have been removed. Vol II has no "Conclusion", which was added to later versions at the request of Hawthorne's readers. Volume I has a page next to end pages front and back which has been removed. Both volumes have intact brown end pages with faint penciled initial in corner, "N J Folsom's" on reverse. Brown boards of both volumes are worn at corners and tops and bottoms of spine, and some edges. Interior pages are lightly toned at margins, but otherwise clean and undamaged.
