Seller: Mullen Books, ABAA, Marietta, PA, U.S.A.
Softcover. Putty card wraps with color illus. and red lettering. 62 pp. with color and bw images throughout. The Harvard Murals, painted in the early 1960s, were originally installed in a penthouse of the university's Holyoke Center in 1964. But the colors of the murals soon faded from exposure to direct sunlight, and each of the paintings faded in its own distinct way. A once-coherent collection had become disparate. What remained of the paintings bore a distant resemblance to the images Rothko intended. This volume was written at this time, when all hope had faded, as well as the murals, and a team of conservators made technical examinations and proposals for salvage of these irreplacable works. Includes essays by the conservators and sections on the history of the murals, Rothko's studies for the murals, and notes on the technical analyses. With an introduction my Marjorie Cohn. Finally, after extensive light-based conservation, Rothko's restored Harvard Murals unveiled in November 2014, coinciding with the reopening of the Harvard Art Museums, re-designed by Renzo Piano. Mark Rothko's Harvard Murals will be on view through July 26, 2015. VG- (Mostly clean but with occasional margin marks in pink marker; previous owner's blind stamp on title page, along with inscription by John Cohn, perhaps related to the editor). May have small defect on lower spine and cover from where a label was removed. Seller Inventory # 148120

Seller: Joel Rudikoff Art Books, White Plains, NY, U.S.A.
Softcover. First. 4to, stiff pictorial wrappers. 62 pp, 32 text figures (25 in color) plus 30 additional illustrations, portrait. In his second attempt at the creation of murals for a public space (the first attempt, completed but never installed, was for the Four Seasons Restaurant in the Segram Building, New York City), Rothko donated five panels to Harvard in 1964 as decoration for the dining room at the Holyoke Center, the University's newly-constructed administration building. Almost immediately they began to deteriorate from the effects of sunlight and wear and tear. In 1979, long after the deteriation became irreversable, they were removed and placed in storage. Very good except for creasing to the bottom tiips of the last few pages and the back cover. Seller Inventory # 27198
