Re-backed with original cloth spine on green boards. Penciled name and date to title page Title label worn. Scarce first edition of this unusual novel of the decline of the hold of religion on English towns. Written by White under the Rutherford Pseudonym - Rutherford having supposedly died White took the second pseudonym of Shapcott to edit his posthumous work. George Orwell described this title as 'one of the best novels written in English'. A Good copy. Scarce.
