Printed in the U.S.A. [Date from the copyright pages.] An attractive reprinting of the first American edition of 1929. Volume I: The Religious, Philosophic, and Ethico-Political Background of the "Divine Comedy" (with Preface and Introductory Chapter); Volume II: The Literary Background and the Poetry of the "Divine Comedy" (with Bibliography by J.E. Spingarn and an Index covering both volumes); x, 354; ix, [1-] 454 pages. The original dark blue cloth is excellent, with just a touch of rubbing to the bottom edges. Gilt lettering on the spines has remained bright; top-edges are colored a deep red. The interior is fresh, with hardly any toning; however, please NOTE: My philosopher-father, who taught philosophy for nearly half a century, left penciling on a good number of pages---heavy on some---but leaving hundreds of pages completely clean; indeed, the second volume seems to have almost no markings at all. (My father had several copies of the Divine Comedy---see the lovely folio volumes with Gustave Dore illustrations, listed separately.) The original dust jackets, printed in red and blue, are unclipped ($9.00) show some toning, and have sunned spines.
