"When the American Medical Association adopted its firs code of ethics in 1847, many of its precepts were drawn from this book. Even today, after undergoing several revisions, the American Medical Association guidelines of ethical conduct for the physician are still based on those formulated by Percival" (Heirs). Percival (1740-1804), an English physician, can best be described as a health reformer. He was asked by his colleagues to devise a set of laws for governing the Manchester Infirmary where he worked as a staff physician, expanding it to this code of ethics. Percival treats the ethical principles physicians and surgeons should exercise at hospitals, with patients, and with pharmacists. Garrison-Morton 1764; Heirs of Hippocrates 1037; Osler 3645.
