First Edition. "The first history of an African-American medical school written by an African-American. Meharry Medical College, founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College, was the first medical college for African-Americans in the South" (Garrison-Morton.com 12990). Meharry Medical College is now the largest private historically black institution in the United States devoted exclusively to educating health care professionals and scientists. Roman, a graduate of Meharry, was the first North American physician of African ancestry to train as both an ophthalmologist and otolaryngologist; he founded the Department of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology at Meharry and served as its first director. .
