Marbled endpapers and edges to match. Very slight wear to the top of the spine and edges. Frontis portrait. Two other illustrations. A touch of foxing on the front couple of leaves otherwise a very clean attractive copy. Caroline was the younger sister of William Herschel who she worked closely with all through her life. She was the first woman to receive a salary as a scientist, the first woman in England to hold a government position and she was the first woman to be awarded a Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1828). She made significant contributions to astronomy during her life time and discovered several comets. The book is quite scarce in the first UK edition. There was also an edition published in the US in the same year. Seller Inventory # 142930
