English diarist and politician, Samuel Pepys, kept a 10 year daily record of his life from 1659-1669. A Cambridge graduate, he achieved a high position in the Royal Navy and was credited with significantly modernizing its operation. His eyes were failing him and he knew he was going blind. This diary became an important historical FIRST HAND ACCOUNT of key moments in history,Restoration England, the year of Charles II coronation and the reestablishment of the monarchy in England, the Great Plague of 1665, the Great Fire of 1666 as well as his detailed accounts of performances he attended as a great patron of the arts. He began his diary in shorthand to keep it private since these were dangerous political times. His diary ended in 1669 when he became fully blind. Book condition: No dj -as issued. Dark green/red leather spine with gilt lettering and design. Front and back boards of marbled paper with leather strips at hinges and leather corners. Marble design carried to paper edges and also to end pages. Previous owners' names, dates and locations on second endpaper. 815 pages, small tear on preface page at right edge. Intact, boards show edge wear and rubbing with some age spots (most typical of books printed in England during this time period due to type of paper used.)Edited by Richard Lord Braybrooke.
