Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. This is a beautifully illustrated vintage copy of "Men of Concord and Some Others as Portrayed in the Journal of HENRY DAVID THOREAU." 1936 1st edition; Houghton Mifflin Company; Boston. Edited by Francis H. Allen. This edition features 10 full-page color plates and numerous in-text black & white Illustrations by N.C. WYETH. From a review: "Thoreau's Journal is rich in comments on the people he met and talked with in his daily walks - Farmer's, fishermen, laborers, loafers, to say nothing of such friends as Emerson, Alcott, and Channing. Francis H. Allen, author of the Thoreau Bibliography and co-editor of the Walden Edition of the Complete Works, has made a selection of these intimate portraits and N.C. Wyeth (for many years a student and admirer of Thoreau) has created a series of illustrative paintings to accompany them, which are reproduced in full color. The result is a book that shows Thoreau in a new light as a man among men, a neighbor, and a citizen of Concord." Here are some examples of the contents: Visitors to the Walden Hut; Emerson and Alcott; Indians in Concord; A Drunken Dutchman; Long Island Oystermen; Irish Farming in New England; Sam the Jailer; Summer Evening in the Village; City Children; Daniel Webster's Farm; Aiding a Fugitive Slave; Haying; Fish Spearers; A Woman Lecturer; The Littleton Giant; A Lurker in the Woods.and much more. Condition: Clean covers and spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the text pages are clean with only an occasional light smudge found. Tanning to the end papers and pastedowns. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
