Cushing Bibliography no. 24: "The present volume was commenced in 1915 soon after the completion of his volume on the pituitary disorders, and it therefore represents nearly twenty-five years of work; by common consent it is regarded as Dr. Cushing's greatest monograph. It is the embodiment of all the things he has stood for during his career as a clinician: his painstaking case records and photographs, his unusual artistic ability evident in his own numerous operative sketches, and his extraordinary knowledge of the day-to-day life of his patients. . . . 1765 copies were printed, none with English imprint." Some of the passage quoted above from the Bibliography is also quoted by John Fulton on p. 700 of his biography of Harvey Cushing. Fulton does not name the person who wrote this, only referring to the person as one of Cushing's "friends". Fulton does quote more by Cushing's friend: "the day-to-day life of his patients, the fact that he gave as much, if not more, time and attention to the impecunious Tim Donovan as he did to Leonard Wood can be read between the lines and it makes the book irresistibly fascinating." The pages in Cushing's book for Timothy Donovan are pp. 667, 669, 700, 734; those for Leonard Wood are pp. 408-414. So copies of the first edition are available, including copies with the dust jacket. This copy is especially bright and the dust jacket, although not perfect, is very nice.
