First Printing. A VERY GOOD, clean, tight copy sans rips/tears, stains, discoloration and interior markings. "In 1989, Jefferson A. Singer, clinical psychologist and author of 'The Remembered Self,' was offered an opportunity to work in a drug and alcohol agency that treated indigent individuals suffering from the most severe forms of alcoholism and drug addiction. As both a therapist and a researcher, he felt compelled to make sense of the devastating life stories shared with him by the most hardened and isolated of these individuals. In vivid portraits, Singer tells the dramatic stories of this group of men, detailing how they fell into the depths of addiction, and explores with them their efforts to battle despair and find meaning in their lives. Representing the full spectrum of American life, these tragic histories of a millionaire businessman, a former major league baseball player, a Vietnam War veteran, a gay convict, and others are painful examples of how addiction manifests itself in every corner of society." 336 pages. Reviews
A staff psychologist for the Southeastern Council on Drug Dependence and Alcoholism who has been researching the riddle of chronic addiction since the late 1980s, Singer here focuses on the chronic alcoholic and addict who have been repeatedly exposed to treatment and rehabilitation alternatives (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous) yet choose to return to a life of substance abuse. He argues that chronically addicted patients all share an existential disconnection with society that the "disease concept" of substance abuse fails to address. Singer effectively introduces this theory and then uses the patients' own stories to illustrate. While the result is an interesting addition to the literature, it is written for counseling professionals and makes wide use of psychological terms. Recommended for academic or special libraries supporting psychology and counseling programs.?A. Arro Smith, San Marcos P.L., Tex.
