"Abridgement Edition" of this Executive Department Message and Reports. Original black cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Moderate wear and rubbing to edges with cloth fraying at head and tail of spine and corners; small chip to front joint; some soiling and scratching with mild discoloration. Tight binding and clean interior. Some foxing, mostly to edges of text block and endpapers. This volume contains a message from President U. S. Grant as well as reports and accompanying papers from the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of War, the Secretary of the Navy, the Secretary of the Interior, the Postmaster-General, and the Commissioner of Agriculture. Most notably, it includes a report from General of the Army W. T. Sherman, in which he details the ongoing Indian Wars. It features updates on the conflict with the Sioux, material on Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, notes on the operations of Generals Crook, Terry, and Sheridan as well as Colonel Miles, and analysis of George A. Custer's debacle at the Little Bighorn. The report offers lengthy quotes from General Terry and Major Reno, adding, "five companies of the Seventh Cavalry, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Custer in person… were literally obliterated, and the remaining seven companies saved by the brave and prudent conduct of Major Reno, and the timely arrival of General Terry." ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 815 pp. Seller Inventory # 024440
