First Edition, Duodecimo, original brown cloth over boards, red outline borders by an early owner, gilt stamped text on spine. A 16 chapter collection first embodied as lectures given at the Lowell Institute in Boston, MA, this collection can be considered a compliment to Agassiz's "Essays on Classification." Very good, moderate shelf wear, red added to publisher's colophon on title page by previous owner, damp staining to top edges.
