Reviews
Other single-volume opera dictionaries are available, but this is the only one that offers a particularly American focus. It lists works, composers, librettists, performers, and terms, paying special attention to performances of the Metropolitan Opera. Thus, entries for works list not only the place, date, and cast of the world premier and U.S. premier but of Metropolitan productions. Statistics through the 1986-87 season are included, and essays on selected topics (e.g., Pavarotti on La Boheme ) are scattered throughout. An attractive volume that should prove a useful source on opera in general and American performances in particular. Robert W. Richart, Western Library Network, Olympia, Wash.
