Michael Ruetz was born in Berlin in 1940. He studied Sinology, Japanese and Journalism. From 1969 to 1973, he was a staff photographer for the weekly magazine Stern. Since then he has worked solely as a freelance photographer and as a contract writer and photographer with Little Brown and Company. Ruetz is a professor at an art academy in northern Germany. Michael Ruetz, geboren 1940 in Berlin, hat sich erst nach seinem Sinologie-Studium für die Fotografie entschieden. Er lebte 13 Jahre lang im Ausland und war bis 2005 Professor für Kommunikationsdesign an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Braunschweig. Er erhielt den Otto-Steinert-Preis, den Villa-Massimo-Preis sowie 2006 in Paris den Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Ruetz ist Mitglied der Akademie der Künste zu Berlin.
