Bob Beith spent two years as a watch-keeping engineering officer on a Royal Navy frigate and also assisted in a dockyard refit, after completing a degree in mechanical engineering at Cambridge University, UK. Having joined Foster Wheeler, a major engineering company in the power, process, and petrochemical industry, he initially worked with a team designing and developing key components for the first naval nuclear submarine. He then moved on to become R&D Manager, in support of the extensive power-plant build taking place in the UK, particularly on coal, gas, and waste heat units. Appointed Director in 1978 Bob spearheaded the introduction of new technology and new business into the company in the environmental and energy field, including gasification and pyrolosis. He was Director responsible for the Nuclear Division and Quality Assurance, was involved in the setting up and operation of three subsidiaries, and also sat on the DTI Process Plants Committee. In 1988 Bob became Managing Director of Best Global Limited, consultants in engineering environmental clean-up systems for process and manufacturing plants - also with British Marine Technology to develop an environmental team. Currently Bob supports small companies exploiting new energy technology and is an active member of the IMechE's Energy, Environment, and Sustainability Group. Ian Burdon is a Vice-President and Senior Professional Associate of PB Power, UK. He heads up the Sustainable Energy Developments Group and has been associated with projects in renewable energy for many years. Ian has provided technical advice on such projects for development companies, municipalities, and lending banks, both in the UK and overseas, and has acted as an expert witness at planning enquiries and judicial reviews. Ian is an external lecturer on project-based management at the University of Durham Business School and a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, where he is Vice-Chairman of the Power Conversion and Applications Professional Network. Ian is an active member of the Energy, Environment, and Sustainability Group of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and is also a member of their Renewable Power Committee. Ian is responsible for directing all activities on sustainable energy developments, including climate change issues, renewable energy, advanced energy technologies such as gasification and pyrolysis, and 'clean' energy technologies including the identification and development of CHP and community heating projects. Ian is an active member of the North East England Renewable Energy Group (NEREG), which is developing a renewable energy strategy for the region on behalf of Government Office - North East. Mike Knowles, Chartered Engineer, is a graduate of Kings College, London. He is a Member of the IMechE, being a member of its Energy Committee (now Energy, Environment, and Sustainability Group), the Power Industries Division, Energy Working Group, and Renewable Power Committee. Mike project-managed the Institution's 2020 vision 'The Engineering Challenges of Energy' and he was technical co-ordinator of the Power Industry Division's Schools' Website Design Competition - 'Bringing Energy to Life'. For this he designed a CD ROM for Key Stage 3 students in secondary schools, showing the engineering basics of fuel supply, conversion, and end use, and involving material from many well-known engineering companies. Having written papers on waste heat recovery, energy from waste, and industrial boilers, Mike has also helped to organize many IMechE conferences, including Alternatively Fuelled Vehicles and Micro Energy Systems. Mike spent time on design of power plant installation and systems for aircraft, and refrigeration equipment, before becoming a project engineer for Babcock & Wilcox Limited, designing waste heat recovery boilers and heat exchangers for the gas, petrochemical, steel-making, and gas turbine industries. Later his responsibilities were as Proposals Manager for steel and glass-making heat recovery plant and fluidized bed boilers and Sales and Marketing Manager for turnkey waste to energy projects. Currently, Mike is acting as a consultant on energy and waste matters, involving marketing and planning reports for leading companies in the power supply industry, and major manufacturing and contracting companies on waste to energy and CHP.
