Add to basketThe island of Antigua in the eastern Caribbean has a long and rich history associated firstly with Great Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries when it was the HQ of the Royal Navy's Leeward Island's fleet. In the 20th century Antigua became one of the island bases to host air forces of the US Army and Navy. This association with the United States continued from the 1950s until 2015 when various electronic listening posts were established on the island. Volume I of the Military Complexes of Antigua describes the initial colonization of the island, development of the Royal Navy, its impact on English Harbour, in conjunction with the fortifications and protection of the island by the Militia and companies of various regiments of the British Army. These developments are set in the context of the various wars in which Britain was involved in from the 17th to the 19th centuries, both in Europe and North America, and which saw the development of the British Empire. Illustrated with b+w & coloured maps, charts, timelines and photographs. VOL II is now available, see separate title record Military Complexes of Antigua, Vol II.
