He learns of a piece of larceny about to be perpetrated in Nevada. A perfectly respectable race horse is having his rear end dyed with spots by a local beautician so its owner can run it in a race strictly for appaloosas, thus taking the locals. Dino decides to get in on the take. What really happens is that he enters the rich, often larcenous, always surprising down-home world of quarter horse or back-country racing - a world where anything goes as long as it's done with the right touch.
